Space Traveler Discloses Emotional Distress Following ‘Tsunami of Backlash Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her battle with depression after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also featured celebrity crewmates.

The mission was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a public message, describing a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the period after the flight.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said everything she had worked for – from her lab work and years of training to the personal milestone of her heritage – was drowned out under the avalanche of misogyny.

She is best known for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of survivors of assault.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after an attack during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

The Fog Begins to Lift

In the time since reaching space, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.

She added that despite the negativity, important benefits had resulted from the experience, such as spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

Flight Details

The fully automated spacecraft lifted off from Texas in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that crossed the edge of space.
